The Nat & Dick Show

In today’s age one would have thought that discriminating against those younger than you would be a thing of the past. However, it would appear that the Bill of Human Rights allows for such a thing. Thank god that the Green Party has come to the rescue an introduced a members bill that will hopefully remove such discrimination. Should it pass, no more will youth be working 40 hours weeks to earn what an adult earns in 30.

I hope you all managed to take a couple of minutes out of your busy schedules on the 28th April to remember those that have lost their lives while working. When I think back over the years, I remember all those people who I have known who lost their lives doing what they enjoyed. May they rest in peace.

Today we celebrate International Workers Day. Drop everything you are doing, take off all your clothes and run naked down George Street. Actually, on a second thought. Please don’t. Today we celebrate all the workers around the world. It is a day where we can celebrate all the work done by unions and other worker organisations around the world. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

Ask not only what you can do for your union, but what your union will do for you.

At a recent Fire Service Commission Function it was quite typical that the University Deputy Proctor and Campus were rather quick to say that students were the only people in Dunedin that lit fires. What a load of absolute crap. Thankfully the fire service knew the truth and came to our aid by pointing out that the 6 people arrested at the Hyde Street Keg Race a few years back were indeed not students.

Until next time, enjoy your studies and remember, OPSA are here for you.

I am glad you are finding the OPSA President blog useful. Both Natalie and I would be more than willing to provide more updates for this blog. Please let me know more about what you would like to see posted on this blog and we will endeavour to see it happen. Both Richard and Natalie post to this blog. The presidents are paid to do the following things:

Local Representation
Natalie and Richard sit on many boards and committees

-Polytechnic Council
-Academic Board
-Health and Safety
-Flexible Delivery
-Library Committee
-Student Job Search
-CTU Local Affiliate Council
-Dunedin North Working Party
-PANDO
-Faculty Boards
-UniQ

By sitting on these local committees we are able to represent the views of students so thats students are not missed out when it comes to decision making. Both Natalie and Richard also represent students views to the local community to ensure that students are not getting a raw deal.

National Representation
We are affiliated in NZUSA which is the national student body and they are responsible for lobbying political parties to ensure that students are represented. There two main goals are free education and a universal student allowance.

Welfare and Advocacy
Natalie and Richard and the rest of Team OPSA ensure that students are looked after on a daily basis. If a student has an issue be it personal, financial or academic we are here to help you through these issues. Some of the welfare and advocacy services we provide are:
-Emergency Grants
-Acting of behalf of students
-Speaking with lecturers
-Dealing with Landlords
-Tenancy Advice
-Legal Advice

Events
OPSA runs many events through out the year. These include:
-Happy Friday
-Frozen Chicken Bowling
-BBQ's
-Movie Nights

If you have an idea for an event please feel free to come up to our office and have a chat.

We also provide the following:
-UniPol
-Clubs and Societies
-Student Diaries
-Handbooks
-gYRo
-Student Discount Directory
-Free Pool Table

OPSA's job is to ensure that you have the best possible time while studying at Polytechnic and to ensure that you are treated fairly by lecturers, general staff and fellow students.

The Presidents (Co-Presidents) job is to oversea the running of the association and to ensure that everything above and more happens.

If you would like to discuss more about what Natalie and Richard do, please feel free to pop up to our office anytime or email either one of us at either richard@opsa.org.nz or natalie@opsa.org.nz.

If there is something that either Richard, Natalie or Team OPSA can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
Richard
